Why You Should Step Away from Your Business for the Holidays

Melissa Zimmermann VA Circa 2019

The holiday season is here, and if you’re anything like me, it feels like your to-do list is growing faster than your holiday cheer. As female entrepreneurs—and especially as mothers—it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle. There’s always one more thing to check off, one more email to send, or one more project to finish. But here’s the truth: stepping away from your business over the holidays isn’t just okay—it’s essential.

Taking intentional time off to recharge, connect with family, and reflect on your year can be the gift that keeps on giving—for you, your business, and the people you love most.

The Importance of Stepping Away

It’s tempting to stay “on” all the time, especially when you’re the one driving the ship. But stepping away doesn’t mean you’re letting your business down—it means you’re setting yourself up for long-term success.

Here’s why:

  • Recharge Your Energy: Burnout is real, and running on empty doesn’t serve anyone. Taking a break lets you return to your work refreshed and ready to tackle new challenges.

  • Strengthen Family Connections: Let’s be honest—our families need us as much as we need them. Fully unplugging during the holidays creates opportunities for quality time and lasting memories.

  • Gain Fresh Perspective: Distance gives clarity. When you step back, you might discover creative solutions or new ideas you wouldn’t see while stuck in the daily grind.

How to Step Away (Without Stressing Out)

Stepping away from your business might feel overwhelming, but with a little planning, you can make it happen smoothly:

  1. Plan Ahead: Finish critical tasks early and set clear boundaries for what can wait until after the holidays. Communicate these timelines to clients and your team.

  2. Automate Where You Can: Use tools like email autoresponders or social media schedulers to keep things running while you’re offline.

  3. Delegate Wisely: If you have a VA, this is their time to shine. Delegate last-minute admin tasks, social media engagement, or even holiday-related business activities.

What Happens When You Step Away

The magic of taking time off is that everything won’t fall apart—and in many cases, your business will benefit:

  • Your clients will respect your boundaries and see you as a role model for self-care.

  • You’ll reconnect with the “why” behind your business, which can fuel your passion for the year ahead.

  • You’ll return with fresh ideas, a clear mind, and a renewed sense of purpose.

This Christmas, give yourself the permission to pause. Step away from the hustle, recharge with your family, and come back stronger in the new year. Your business—and your loved ones—will thank you for it.

P.S. Here are some Last-Minute Hacks:

  • Buy your Christmas baking from a local market, bakery, or another mom

  • Ask your family to help with errands (let go of perfection, whatever cranberry sauce and buns your husband picks up will work just fine)

  • Gift bags > Wrapping Paper. Your kids don't care what their gift is covered in. (One year we used sheets for big items and it worked great)

  • Order delivery for your groceries or liquor.

  • Write down your entire "to-do" list and scratch off anything that fills you with dread. It's important to do what makes YOU and YOUR family happy, not what society says is a "must".
