Here’s the truth: you don’t have to be a tech wizard, a marketing guru, or someone who actually enjoys reading about Google algorithms to get your business found online.
I know SEO has a bad reputation. The second you hear “meta tags,” “backlinks,” and “crawlability,” you start wondering if you accidentally signed up for a computer science degree. But here’s the good news is that you don’t need to learn how to code or spend 17 hours a week optimising your site just to show up on Google.
Some of the most effective SEO strategies are simple. They work. And they don’t require you to cry into your coffee over keyword research.
So, let’s skip the jargon and cut straight to the things you actually need to do.
First, What Even Is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is just a fancy term for: helping people find your website when they search online.
If someone types “best gluten-free bakery in Calgary” or “how to organize my business without losing my mind,” Google decides which websites get shown. Your goal? To be one of those lucky ones at the top.
And no, you don’t have to pay a small fortune to an SEO specialist or disappear into a keyword black hole. A few smart moves can get you seen.
The Not-Scary SEO Basics
1. Use keywords like a normal human.
Think about what your dream clients would type into Google. Then, use those words in your website copy, blog posts, and headlines naturally. Instead of “best business coach productivity growth entrepreneur success hacks 2024” crammed into one sentence, try something like “Business coach helping women entrepreneurs streamline their business so they can work less and earn more.” (Keywords: Business coach, women entrepreneurs, streamline business, work less and earn more)
2. Make your website easy to read.
For both humans and Google. That means clear headings, short paragraphs, bullet points, and zero squint-to-read fonts. If your site looks like a wall of text from 2005, we need to talk.
3. Create content people actually want.
Google loves useful content. So does your audience. Blog posts, FAQs, guides; basically anything that answers their questions and makes their life easier.
4. Fix your page titles & descriptions.
Every page has a title and description that shows up in search results. “Home” and “Welcome” aren’t doing you any favours. Make them clear and specific, like: “Branding Services for Female Entrepreneurs | Your Business Name”.
5. Claim your Google Business Profile.
If you’re local, this is a free, 10-minute win. Add your location, hours, and a few photos. It’s the easiest SEO boost you’ll ever get.
6. Speed matters.
Slow websites = people clicking away. Compress your images, ditch the unnecessary animations, and test your site speed with Google’s PageSpeed tool.
The Big Secret: SEO Isn’t a One-Time Thing
You don’t have to do all of this today. Even one or two changes will make a difference, as long as you keep going. SEO works best when you treat it like a habit, not a project you check off once and forget.
